In a two-day sprint, our stakeholder tasked us with revamping a minimalist desktop-based EU Think Tank website to enhance the user experience through improved information architecture.
Over the next two days, our challenge was to redesign a product's user interface. UX research was not included in our scope for this project. We were tasked with reevaluating the current information architecture, exploring changes to content organization, and adjusting the navigation logic. Our specific objective would be provided by a real stakeholder.
Savvas Papadopoulos, the coordinator of the EU Youth Hub, provided us with specific requirements.
The website was relatively new and lacked a concrete design, featuring only three existing pages (homepage, team page, news page). They needed us to design essential pages, including the homepage, team page, and templates for various content types like activities, news, podcasts, events, articles, videos, and policy papers, complete with video sliders. They also wanted to maintain the Raleway fonts and incorporate colors from the EU color palette. Due to the short two-day sprint, our primary focus was on desktop design.
To pinpoint areas for improvement, we conducted a design critique involving fellow designers, resulting in some intriguing findings:
Insufficient 'breathing room'
Absence of filtering options
We drew inspiration from three think tanks: GSBTB, Eythinktank, and Europarl. These competitors exhibited several shared characteristics:
Effective filtering functionality
A straightforward and simple layout
We maintained the Raleway fonts and based our colour pallet on EU colours.
Our design was based on the provided style tile. We prioritized minimalism to ensure a smooth user experience. As per the request, we developed a homepage, team page, and templates for various content categories, each featuring video sliders. Moreover, we crafted archive, contact, Terms & Conditions, and privacy pages, while also incorporating filtering options.
